ABOUT THE PLAY
In the Edwardian boomtown of Oldham, Sarah Rosebury, a local Music
Hall comedienne, must find her young brother Sidney – he’s only gone and signed up to serve in the
army! She must stop telling her tall
tales, stop singing her silly songs, and go and rescue him. He’s just turned 15, he’s in danger, and it’s
all Sarah’s fault…
Helped by her friends, she sets off to the battle frontline of
1915 France to save him, meeting other wonderful women from Oldham along the
way…
Boomtown Gals by Joyce Branagh is a mix of fact and fiction:
An incredible heroic quest of a play, peppered with songs, and
filled with humour - based on the real women, and their amazing true stories, discovered
through local research.
Directed by award-winning Alyx Tole, Original Music from Cameron Mackintosh
Bursary winner Kieran Buckeridge, with set and costume design by Olivia Du
Monceau.
This is a one act play, followed, after the interval, by an
optional
Q & A session, talking through the research and true life tales
behind the play.
